Get ready for summer festivals and learn this classic routine!
The Big Apple Routine is a high-energy, fast-paced group swing dance that originated during the swing era of the 1930s. The dance incorporates classic jazz steps such as Suzy Qs, Apple Jacks, Truckin’, and Spank the Baby, among others.
Originally stemming from the African American jazz dance tradition in the South—particularly in South Carolina—the routine was later popularized by Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. The most iconic version was choreographed by Frankie Manning and famously performed at the 1939 World’s Fair.
The Big Apple is celebrated for its joyful spirit, group coordination, and lively, infectious rhythm. It’s often used today in social swing dance scenes and performances as a showcase of vintage jazz movement and community energy.
With this workshop, we aim at an intermediate level of solo jazz dancers or experienced lindy hoppers. There will be two sessions: the first one on Saturday will concentrate more on the second part of the routines (after the Bridge), the Sunday session will be devoted to the first part of the routine and drilling.
