Balboa is a type of partner swing dancing that developed in the 1920s and ’30s in Southern California. The name Balboa comes from the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, where it is believed to have been popular. The movements look and feel like they are loosely based on Charleston, but have become something unique. The basic steps are formed of a sequence of steps danced over 8 counts.
Usually, it is danced to quite fast music, but thanks to rotations and tiny steps, it does not exhaust the dancers (remember about the origin – a beach in California). It is snappy and elegant even in a hot summer!
