Stormy Weather (1943) is best known for one of the greatest dance scenes in cinematic history, aka the Nicholas Brothers’ iconic staircase splits (https://youtu.be/IoMbeDhG9fU?si=eJelvkFIC-nNLWAz), performed to Cab Calloway’s Jumpin’ Jive. However, the movie consists of much more. The movie features an extraordinary cast of Black performers, such as Cab Calloway, Katherine Dunham, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Waller, and the Nicholas Brothers, in a time when opportunities for Black artists were limited. While the movie still contains elements of racial stereotypes and minstrel traditions, it also showcases many of the greatest Black performers of the era sharing the screen.
In this workshop, we’ll explore another final number of the movie “My, My Ain’t That Somethin’”. Together we’ll discover its authentic jazz vocabulary, rhythm, and musicality. Basic solo jazz vocabulary would be sufficient to follow this workshop. If you would like to see the performance from the movie, follow the link: https://youtu.be/1ooDpD3jvxQ?si=2E7BDzuXxmPzIy9N
